3 Questions to Ask Before Starting a Bathroom Remodeling Project

July 23, 2015

When you get up in the morning and dread going into your outdated bathroom that lacks both function and style, it might be time to consider a bathroom remodel. Like any home renovation project you need to take the time to properly plan so you can enjoy the results now and for years to come, while feeling great about the investment you made in your home.

The questions you have can fall into two categories: the questions you need to ask before contacting any professionals, and the questions you need to ask to help select the best home remodeling contractor for your project.

  1. Is this bathroom remodel based on aesthetics, functionality or both?

Reworking the floorplan of your space, whether you are just rearranging the layout or are stealing space from another room, can be a big job, but worth it in some cases. Simply changing out the fixtures in a space that does not work well for you can provide immediate satisfaction, but you will likely have the same frustrations again down the road.

Of course if the layout it works well, there is no need to expand the scope of the bathroom remodel and you can just focus on going from outdated to fabulous!

  2. What is the actual budget available?

This amount needs to be what is secured and available on day one to get started so you can stay on track. It also lets you know if your expectations meet the reality of your actual spending, and if not, allows you to make adjustments at this phase of the project.

Once you know those answers, you can start selecting a contractor. These questions can help you find the best match for your bathroom remodel:

  3. What do you know about the company you are hiring?

It can be helpful to have a list so you can get all your questions answered. Typical questions include:

  • How long have you been in business?
  • Do you have references?
  • What is the warranty on your work?
  • What are the contract terms? (This is important so you know how much is due at certain points in the project, and what your expectations are for being able to check the work.)

There are many more questions about finalizing the details of your bathroom remodel project, but those can get you on the right track. Once you feel good about the start of your new space, you can enjoy picking out the finishes and then enjoy your new bathroom.
